Call for Vendors!

Hello Ric Rac Roundup lovers! I wanted to let you know that I'm working on a new event this October 15th! The overall event is a Haunted Mansion Costume Ball. It is being hosted by the non-profit organization Thank You Walt Disney. TYWD is working to refurbish Disney's original animation studio here in KC.

Aside from the fun of the costume ball, the dancing, food and drinks there will also be a craft market! The call for vendors is officially open so if you are interested, email me at betsy@bonbonatelier.com

Q&A | Maiko Kuzunishi became cuckoo for clock design by accident

Maiko Kuzunishi of Kansas City is the owner and designer behind Decoylab. Her clocks are sold through online boutiques around the world; she has distributors in Australia and South Korea. On Saturday, Decoylab clocks (ranging from $18 to $120), other housewares and brooches will be sold at Ric Rac Roundup craft fair in Westport.

What’s your personal design style?

Midcentury modern with French country thrown in. Those don’t always go together, but I can’t help it.

Your clocks are sold around the world. How did you become cuckoo for clock design?

By accident. I’d quit my day job because I wanted to do something creative for myself. I illustrated a bunch of calendars, using a gocco machine (a cross between silk-screen and rubber stamping) and put them on Etsy.com. One of the illustrations was a cuckoo clock, and I thought it’d be interesting as a real clock. So I made a clock kit and put it on Etsy, too. The clock kits kept selling, the calendars didn’t.

How have your clock designs evolved?

I assemble the clocks, and I keep making them more durable. They’re laser cut. Mostly bamboo. There are animals (owls, fawns, hedgehogs) and decorative clocks (flowers, stars, squares). Everything is made to order, so there’s no waste. I want to see how far I can go with the clock. I have 30 designs so far. It’s all fun.

What other housewares do you design?

Tea towels. I wanted some color because the clocks are mostly wood hued. I designed the fabrics and printed them using spoonflower.com. (Among the patterns are bicycles and a 2012 calendar). Also, laser-cut felt coasters. I designed them for Ric Rac Roundup this month (see box for details).

What are your favorite magazines and design blogs?

I love Everyday Food. I get great ideas from it. And I like the site www.ffffound.com (an image-sharing website).

Tell us about your home.

It’s a 1954 ranch in a neighborhood off Ward Parkway. It has irregular-sized doors and other nonstandard details.

What’s your favorite room?

Probably the kitchen. My husband and I redid it with blue cabinetry and white countertops.

You’re from Japan. What brought you to Kansas City?

My dad got a job here when I was 12. My family moved back to Japan, but I stayed here. I went to the Kansas City Art Institute. That’s how I met my husband. He’s an elementary school art teacher.

Did you design anything for your 3-year-old daughter Leela’s room?

A pink banner with her name on it and printed artwork.

What’s your next house project?

Finding a new house on the Kansas side. We want a place where my husband can play the guitar, where Leela can play and I can have a bigger studio.

Anything new you’d like to design in that bigger studio?

Furniture for personal use. Lamps for customers with laser cutting and maybe combining with fabric with my designs on it. There are a whole lot of possibilities to make something unique and fun.

I've had a request for men's gifts from our vendors and I was please to tell them that yes, you can find a gift for that special man in your life at Ric Rac. For the next couple of days I'm going to highlight some gifts that I think are perfect for your man.

For instance, lusterbunny's octopus cuff links. In my mind all men should wear (or at least have) a shirt that needs cuff links. There is just something so Cary Grant about it. However instead of boring silver links, I think octopi are much more exciting.

Alice Youngblood and Cristin Llewellyn met in the fiber department at the Kansas City Art Institute, hit it off and have been designing, hand dyeing and printing these beautiful pieces ever since.

KC Modern Quilt Guild Show!

So, perhaps I never told you about the fun that will be happening inside of bon bon during the Ric Rac Roundup? Well, besides having a slew of lovely new little things for you to see and purchase we will also be hosting.....a Modern Quilt Show! Yes, ladies and gentlemen be prepared to see the wonder and inspiration that is modern quilting. There will be color and pattern and amazing backbreaking stitching. You will be so inspired you will want to make one..or at least curl up with one on your bed.

All the quilts will have been made by members of the newly formed Kansas City Modern Quilt Guild..a gaggle of ladies who are reinventing the traditional quilt forms with modern aesthetics. As you can see, I'm super excited about it! I hope you are too!

Stir Designs says that they are a mother/daughter creative partnership. Now that is too cute isn't it? I love a family business! Daughter Stephanie was in textile design at KU (way to actually use your major Stephanie!) and with her mother, Deb they create hand-dyed and handmade pieces to brighten up your home. Oh, and jewelry..they do really cute fiber-infused jewelry too. So, basically you will probably walk away with something for both your home and yourself from this booth. Which is a good thing! Just make sure you budget for it!

We love bold colors and graphics so we can't wait to see the booth that these two come up with..

Introducing: Betsy Lemon!

Betsy Lemon (by the way, has there ever been a cuter name than that?) is a member of the most mysterious of clubs... Weavers. The way these folks can make fabric out of nothing but some fiber and a loom intrigues me. If nothing else, to have the patience to sit, warping and wefting all day..good for you weavers! Betsy weaves silk and rayon into awesome fabric and then creates clothing from it. Such a lot of work Betsy, I salute you!

Ms. Samantha Kuykendall comes from a very crafty family. You will see them here and anon at craft show after craft show--in fact you probably saw her mom at last year's Ric Rac! For the most part however, the family does gifty crafts (awesome little lovelies covered in glitter), so we were super excited to hear that Samantha is branching out into jewelry. She really brings a feminine, vintagey look to her pieces with the use of found objects. If you are looking to bring a little bit of sparkle to your life, I think this will be the booth to stop at!

Do you know what makes the ultimate statement of love? Not candy, not chocolate or flowers, not even a diamond ring. A simple plate or mug will do the trick..as long as it's a Folded Pigs plate that says "I love you more than zombies love brains". That is when you know when you are truly loved, because you know how much zombies love brains? A whole lot. In fact, it turns out they can't live without them. Isn't that sweet?

I've seen it time and time again. Breathless hordes of people ogling Lusterbunny's candy colored jewelry. First they have to narrow it down: ring, necklace, brooch or earrings. Hmmm. So many options, all delightful...but...Necklace! But then what color? and then what image? Oh the mind boggles at the options and you can see them thinking "Well, the flower is so pretty and goes with everything" But I will bet my bottom dollar that they will be positively unable to walk out without an Octopus. No, it doesn't make as much sense as the flower..but you just have to have it.

So, you know how you went on that feverish kick of reusing your old clothes and textiles to make new stuff? And how it really didn't turn out like you thought it would? In fact, jeans made into a jean skirt just really isn't the look you are going for? Well, you can rejoice! Because Heather of bebe and alice is being all super recycle-y and making fabulous stuff! I mean, look at that scarf. That is the kind of scarf you get stopped on the street for..you'll never get anywhere because people will keep asking you where you got it. Not to mention how you will feel all good for wearing environmentally friendly clothing.

Introducing: Glazed Earth!

Ceramicists and potters. I love them both. In a way they are the same thing, but for some reason the term potter and their accompanying pottery just seems very romantic to me. Glazed Earth seems like true pottery to me. I love the thought of Judy heaving slabs of clay around and using stamps and found objects to work that clay from a lump to a texturally awesome teapot. Or dish. Or vase. I love that the glaze says Hey! come look at me, and once you are there you must touch it. And of course, once you touch it you have to take it home. Because you can't possibly leave that gorgeous little thing, can you?

Introducing: Andrea Yates!

Look at those cups, aren't they fantastic? Don't you look at them and suddenly see yourself in a gorgeous, modern all white and blue kitchen drinking tea? (while looking out over your ocean view?) Well, that is what I see when I look at Andrea Yates' ceramics. They are so simple and delicate, yet have fabulous designs on them and are sturdy enough for the dishwasher and microwave. How does she do it? Maybe she learned the secrets when she was an artist in residence at Guldagergård International Ceramic Research Center in Skælskør, Denmark. (I just had to throw that in there, because I love the name Guldagergård) Well, someday when I have my house with an ocean view, I plan on having a whole set of Andrea's dishes, cups and bowls. I hope that day comes soon!

Well if that is the case then I think you need to go give a big Thank You! to Brady Vest from Hammerpress. He started his business in 1994, and in my humble opinion, his work totally kick-started the letterpress love we see everywhere today. Make sure you have a list of everyone you need birthday cards for so you can stock up at Ric Rac. Make sure you check out your open wall space too--you might find yourself with one, two, or five of Hammerpress' awesome posters..

What's cookin' good lookin'? Am I the only one who wishes she were a little more Donna Reed in the kitchen? Well, I don't know what will help my cooking skills, but I do know that I'll be good lookin with my aprons, casserole covers, and bake ware carriers from Oven Luvin! I'm kind of fascinated with the idea of showing up at a potluck with armfuls of delicious goodies, all in Oven Luvin carriers. Hmm, I think it's time someone organized a potluck party!

Well, if I had a treasure chest of baubles, I would probably have more Emmy Ray jewelry than any other designer! It's so colorful, and happy. It is kind of vintage-y, but totally modern at the same time. You can totally tell that in her other life she is a florist--her pieces are like flower arrangements to wear!

Introducing: Fresher than Fresh Snowcones!

Just so you know, you will not get to leave the Ric Rac Roundup, without having a snowcone. I don't care if you don't like snowcones, I don't even care if you had a traumatic snowcone experience as a child (but if you did, I'm willing to bet that it involved a county fair and the Tilt a Whirl ride. Am I right?) Because Fresher than Fresh snowcones aren't like those sticky sweet ones you remember from your childhood..these snow cones are made from all natural ingredients with yummy flavors like strawberry rhubarb and lemon prickly pear. Just imagine how incredibly good that is going to be after shopping in the hot sun. I'm considering trying a different flavor every hour...who's with me?

Miss Dayle Bennet from Handmade By Sodapop likes to surprise you. She will come up with some spectacularly adorable item and then disappear. Then, out of the blue she will pop up and Shazam! All new, different stuff. I like to think of her scurrying down to her bright studio, surrounded by ribbons and beads and working on her master plan of craft domination. "What shall I make next?" she asks herself "Pincushions, necklaces, bags, oh I know!" and then in a cloud of scissors and fabric she makes another adorable item that you can't help but want. Sneaky Dayle, very sneaky.

Well, I can tell you one thing, we would not be surrounded by adorable cupcake bath fizzies that smell phenomenal..which would really ruin our day. They are so cute! And such a good gift! And them smell so goooood. Folks, this girl is one of the hardest working crafters in KC and you will get a good look why at Ric Rac..but don't look to long, lest some long-arm shopper snag your cupcakes out from under you. Miss Tara Tonsor of Seek Designs just doesn't have enough time in the day. People are constantly harassing her for jewelry. Necklaces, Earrings, more more more! (I have to admit that we are guilty of it too..sorry Tara!) It's easy to see why though, how cute is her work? She uses found objects to make one of a kind pieces for a super good price. And, if we are lucky, we might get to see some of her large art pieces at Ric Rac. She only does them every once in a while but they tend to be spectacular! Cross your fingers!

What could be better on a hot July day that a cup of freshly brewed, locally roasted coffee? I've got it! A super refreshing swig of Iced Coffee...which is exactly what Oddly Correct gave us at Ric Rac last year, and probably saved the life of many a tired and thirsty shopper. This little company (run by the cutest family ever) roasts their own beans, and prints their own packaging, giving KC a truly unique coffee experience. Stop by the booth and be sure to sign up for the coffee delivery service (which I think is the smartest thing ever) or just by bag after bag of their delicious beans!

Introducing: The Modern Logger!

The Modern Logger is all the work of the one and only Heather Green. When not slaving away during the day as a graphic designer, Heather is hard at work at home making plush log paperweights, pillows and felt ipod/iphone cases. (oooh, will she make an ipad one for the ric rac? I could sure use one..I guess I'll have to wait to see)

Anyway, she embroiders the wood grain pattern on all the log items...no two of which are alike! Heather says that her handmade items are very well crafted and lots of fun...I agree!

Introducing: Emetalworks!

Emily Blodgett-Panos is the designer behind eMetalworks, a jewelry line that uses multimedia items like silver, burlap, wood, plexiglass etc. and turns them into modern statement pieces. This year she has been inspired by a yellow and lime room she remembers from her childhood. She has brought this memory into her pieces with color and the use of cane patterns.

I can't wait to buy a pair of her candy colored enamel earrings. We don't have pics of them (yet) but I've seen them and they are adorable!!

Glazed Earth

Judy Boyer Finnegan--Glazed Earth
I first started working in clay about 16 years ago while a student at Texas Tech University. Just within the last two and a half years I have begun again. I work in white earthenware clay and low-fire glazes. I roll the clay out into slabs; stamp the clay with handmade stamps, found stamps and found objects. Then I cut shapes from the stamped clay and use slumped molds to make the form I desire. Those pieces are then attached to others to form a vase or wish vessel or whatever.

My latest series of pieces are connected with the job I have during the week. As a tailor's assistant I am around fabrics with texture, color, and decorative patterns. I have acquired many scraps of lace and other textural fabrics to press into the clay. I then glaze the pieces in bright colors.

I am an artist; illustrator, designer, crafty chick. I love creating stuff!

For as long as I recall, I've had a passion for art -- doodling, painting, needlework, collage, etc. As a child I was greatly inspired by my mother's sewing and how she persistently created handmade items for me to play with. Through the years my love of sewing and fine needlework had grown, and soon after the birth of our son it fully emerged. With him as my main source of inspiration, I've been continuing to create a variety of children related items including, onesies, booties, bibs, finger puppets, dolls and currently an array of plush creatures. With support from my husband, family and friends I've continued to evolve and have gladly moved forth into the urban rise of crafting.

I reside in Overland Park, Kansas, where each item is fabricated locally and handmade with extra love. I'm ecstatic to share my creations with you and I hope you'll enjoy everything as much as I've love creating it!

Dayle is my name, crafts are my game. I've been crafty my entire it's all I know. I sew, knit, solder, cut and paste to create things. I'm based here in Kansas City, but my hometown is Baltimore, Maryland. I'm an urban girl living in a loft with my hubby and two dogs.

Handmade by Sodapop is a creative venture of pure girly craftiness. It's all about the fun colors, textures and patterns I see everyday. I am passionate about creating beautiful things from my heart. I make handbags, jewelry, flower pins and many other women's accessories, I love the idea of making something beautiful that someone else may enjoy. It makes me feel good knowing I made someone's day.

I have so many ideas and so little time to make them. I do what I can when I can. Sodapop is truly a labor of love. It's sweet, colorful, and full of energy, just like me.

Bryan and Andrea Ring are artists with a passion. A passion for giving raw unconventional materials a beautiful new life.

Bryan and Andrea covet pieces from city streets and random locales; items like street signs and license plates. They then, combine their treasured findings with precious metals to create their unique style of fine art jewelry.

Andrea has been designing and selling jewelry for over twenty years. As a metalsmith she has mastered cold connections and is always looking for new ways to add color into her metalwork. Bryan and Andrea met at college where they studied metalsmithing and design together. This is also where they began to combine their ideas about design, materials, inspiration, and what they wanted to do with their lives. Two years out of school they formed Amuck.

Inspired by graphic urban imagery, this husband and wife team design and fabricate each piece in their midtown Kansas City, Missouri home and studio.

Early Jewelry

To bring the spirit of pasture and prairie, feather on the ground, dusty fences, barns with owls in the rafters, the saloon, harvest, the nostalgia of homestead and the excitement of the old made young again all influenced Kylie Grater's approach to creating jewelry. Her close contact with these organic influences, in part, determines her materials: feather, cowbone, leather, wood & horsehair, to name a few.

In addition to creating jewelry out of new materials, Kylie invents pieces by reconstructing cast-outs and vintage jewelry. Inspiration for this line of jewelry comes from a dictate out of her rural past: one must make use of every little thing! This environmental decision to reuse results i unique and eclectic pieces that are expressive of both the old and new. Kyle Grater resides in Lawrence, KS where all the pieces are handmade.

Emily Jungden is a whiz with jewelry--most especially with enamel. If I kept every piece of her jewelry that I wanted, I would have an Emily Jungden museum! Here she is to introduce herself..

For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to make things. Whether it was sitting in my grandmother's sewing room putting together Barbie clothes, or doodling paper unicorns, the spirit of creativity has always been a part of what I do. I took a metalsmithing class as an elective in college and instantly I fell in love. Whether it is the meticulous process, or the satisfaction of the finished product, I am drawn to this medium. I also have a background in printmaking, which I think is reflected in the strong graphic nature of the colors and shapes of the jewelry I create. I always try to have fun with my work, and my goal is that the person who buys my jewelry loves wearing it as much as I love creating it.

Ever notice how there's just so much cute in the world? I always notice products, prints, patterns, palettes, silhouettes, trends, type, textiles and the list goes on! I couldn't just keep it to myself, so I started crafting as a way to share all the amazing inspiration I find in the world around me. Dirty Laundry evolved as a place to put my stuff. While the items I create vary from aprons, to t-shirts to cupcake bath fizzies, they all share the qualities of cute, stylish, and absolutely handmade. The Dirty Laundress, my logo, is a reflection of me. She's a crafty chick-sassy and sweet. She cooks, cleans, crafts and more- all on her own terms. June Cleaver but kicked up a notch, and I'm guessing she's a little bit of you too!
